Notes on Ambiophonics & the Glasgal Domestic
Concert Hall Following the July 22nd meeting at the home of Ralph Glasgal which I was not able to attend, Anna Logg and I had the opportunity to visit Ralph for a much longer demonstration of his impressive DCH. I concur with A.L.'s views and enthusiasm on many major points. Ralph's system presented large orchestral symphonic works in a way that truly gave one a sense of being transported to the actual musical event in a large concert hall. Expansive holographic soundstaging, bombastic dynamic swings and realistic instrumental timbre combined with rock-solid images to convince you that you had, in fact, paid for your ticket! The only real criticisms I can level at this extraordinary system have more to do with personal preferences than with the system itself, per se. The DCH always put a fair distance between myself and the performance so that I felt like I was seated somewhere mid-hall, when I personally prefer a closer seat. So, the feelings of immediacy and palpability were somewhat lacking. With large scale symphonic works, the presentation worked. With smaller jazz bands and ensembles, I would prefer a more immediate rendering. Perhaps this minor quibble could be quelled with a modicum of equalization . . . or maybe even a better amp or some new cables, Eh, RALPH? Regardless of my own bias, I must admit that Ralph's Domestic Concert Hall system is one of the most impressive, lifelike and exciting systems I have ever heard. With respect to its concert-hall recreation, it has no peer in my experience, except the concert hall itself!! F.A. |
